about

Play became critical as I stepped into my full-time elementary music educator role. Every day, I saw the joy and learning play facilitated for my students and myself as I collaborated with them. Simultaneously, I saw play's healing power, as my students in a large municipality exhibited much more violence in their play than I was used to seeing in classroom observations or student teaching in smaller school districts. Many of my incredible students brought pain into the classroom for many reasons. This largely influenced their creative exploration with instruments and vocalizing. I noticed that when I provided less structured classes for them, there were far fewer moments I initially labeled “interruptions” or “issues” compared to when our lessons were more rigid and standardized (e.g., everybody learns the same song via an Orff-Schulwerk-inspired process). I now see that I failed to provide the outlet they called for. This led me to use my playtime similarly; teaching students who experienced trauma resulted in secondary trauma I had to struggle and cope with. I started to love how weird a song could get just for the sake of making it so. This was me letting out what mangled messes were knotting up inside.
